Student Union

Why Does the Student Union Exist?

The Student Union exists for the edification of students and families at Freedom Christian Schools. It was established in 2007 to address the daily learning challenges which had been of concern to our learning community for a number of years. This is accomplished by better understanding of the individual’s learning profile in relation to the classical curriculum and various teaching styles. It is our calling as a Christian school to do all that is possible to prepare all students for works of service.

Whom Do We Serve?

Purposing to serve atypical learners as part of God’s design for the body of Christ at Freedom is our role. We are challenged to serve based on I Corinthians 12:12 and following, “each part should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored every part rejoices with it.” The present challenges which are addressed at the middle and high school levels are mild learning disabilities in the areas of language and math, study and organizational struggles, attention challenges, testing difficulties related to anxiety and/or memory deficiencies, emotional frailties, social cognition impairments, and mild cognitive impairments. Approximately twenty-five students are presently served.

What Does the Student Union Do?

The Student Union works in connection with the Christian Learning Center and the Freedom faculty to standardize and provide academic intervention protocol, formal and informal assessments, and classroom accommodations and modifications on an individualized basis. Once a student is identified as academically at risk and a plan is arranged, ongoing dialog with parents occurs including yearly individualized planning sessions. We aid families in developing a transition plan for life beyond Freedom Christian High School. Accommodations for standardized testing as well as college packets for presentation to the Office of Disability Services are also available through the Student Union.

Is the Program Working?

“I really appreciate what the Student Union offers. In earlier years, if a student needed an oral testing arrangement or other specific accommodations, making it a reality was almost impossible.” ~Teacher

“This is like a second home to me. I feel more comfortable here. I really like the morning devotions and the one on one we receive. Plus, I would be failing my classes without it. ~Student

“This is a safe place for students to live. It helps them in more than just the academic arena; we are mentoring.” ~Paraprofessional

“It is my prayer that the ministry of the Student Union has heightened our respect for the diversity of our student population and their role within the body of Christ. I am committed to instruction that will assist all students in reaching their God-given potential.” ~Brenda Maas, Direct of the Student Union
